Why your business ranks on Google but ChatGPT does not mention it
Google visibility does not carry over to AI answers on its own. How often Phoenix home-services businesses that Google shows go unnamed by the AI engines, why it happens, and what an owner can check.

The question: Why does my business rank on Google but ChatGPT does not mention it?
The short answer
Because ChatGPT does its own searching, and Google's rankings are not its list. When it answers a question about hiring a contractor, it runs its own searches, through its own crawler and search partners, reads a handful of pages, and names the businesses those pages describe. A strong Google position helps only as far as it puts you on the pages ChatGPT happens to read.
Our own measurements show that one engine's list is not another's. Our newest Phoenix comparison covers window and door businesses and the answers of two engines, Claude and Gemini; ChatGPT and Perplexity will be added. In it, Google showed 61 businesses that we could compare, and 02 of them, 0%3, went unnamed by both engines. Taken one engine at a time, the picture changes: the share of those businesses Claude never named was 33%4, and for Gemini it was 0%5. A business Google shows can be named by one engine and missing from another, and ChatGPT is another engine with its own searching.
What we measure
We take a snapshot of what Google shows for the searches a Phoenix homeowner makes when hiring in each trade we cover. A business counts as shown by Google if Google Places lists it in the top 20 for any of those searches or, where the snapshot captures Google's results page, it appears in the local pack or the top 10 organic results. The research page states what each snapshot captured.
Then we compare that list with the businesses the AI engines we measure named in their answers to homeowner questions over recent weekly runs. A business Google shows that no measured engine named in any of those answers is in the gap. So far that means window and door questions and two engines, Claude and Gemini. We have not measured roofing or heating and air conditioning yet, and ChatGPT and Perplexity will be added to the runs.
For windows and doors, the share of the businesses Google shows that neither engine named was 0%6. That is a small base, and a clean result for the pair does not mean each engine found every business: the per-engine shares above differ.
Each figure's note gives the snapshot date, the weeks of AI answers it is compared with, and the number of businesses behind it. Where a Google lookup failed, or a business's tracking start date falls after the first of those runs began, the note says so. The business-by-business tables are on our Google vs AI research page.
A gap is not a verdict on a business. A business can be a strong company and still not be on the pages the engines read. That is the point: the two systems are measuring different things.
Why it happens
The engines document most of the reasons themselves.
ChatGPT searches with its own crawler. OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot7 is the crawler it uses to surface websites in ChatGPT's search features, and that sites opted out of it are not shown in ChatGPT search answers. A site can rank well on Google and still block OpenAI's crawler, often without the owner knowing, through a robots.txt rule or a security setting at the host or content delivery network. OpenAI's help center gives the eligibility rule directly: allow OAI-Searchbot to crawl the site8, and make sure the host lets OpenAI's published search-bot IP addresses through.
ChatGPT uses other search providers. OpenAI's help center for business workspaces says ChatGPT may share search queries with Bing9 to return web results. So what ChatGPT reads can come from a different company's index than Google's. A business that is well placed on Google but thin on other search engines can be missing from what ChatGPT reads.
The answer is built from other people's pages too. An engine naming contractors reads more than the contractors' own websites. In BrightLocal's test of local searches across ChatGPT Search, Gemini, Google AI Mode, and Perplexity, every platform used directories, and Yelp was used as a source in 33%10 of the searches. That was a small test. In our own Phoenix study, which so far covers window and door questions asked of Claude and Gemini, the website the engines cited most was energyshieldwindowsanddoors.com11, cited in 26%12 of answers. A business with a strong Google Business Profile and a thin or inconsistent presence on those sites gives the engines little to quote.
Engines are selective. Google shows many businesses for a search. An AI answer names a few. SOCi found ChatGPT recommended 1.2%13 of the locations of the multi-location brands it studied, far below how often the same locations appeared in Google's local pack. That study covers large brands rather than independent contractors, but it shows how much narrower an AI answer can be than Google's list: being in Google's longer list does not guarantee a place in the answer.
Answers do not always show their sources. Across all U.S. ChatGPT prompts, Similarweb found roughly 6.8%14 of answers included web citations by May 2026. ChatGPT is not in our Phoenix measurement yet. In it so far, the share of answers that cited at least one website was 74%15 for Claude and 71%16 for Gemini, so even engines that usually cite leave some answers without a source. Where an answer names businesses without a link, you cannot see which page led to the name, which makes the gap harder to diagnose from a single check.
What it does not mean
It does not mean Google no longer matters. Google's own AI features, AI Overviews and AI Mode, draw on Google's index, and Google says there are no additional requirements17 to appear in them beyond being indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Your Google work still counts there.
It does not mean ChatGPT is wrong or that the businesses it names are better. It means ChatGPT read different pages.
And it does not mean one fix closes it. The gap has several causes, and a business can be affected by more than one of them.
What this means for an owner
If you rank on Google and ChatGPT does not mention you, work through the causes in order. Each can be checked.
- Crawler access. Check your robots.txt and ask your host or web agency whether any firewall or bot-protection setting blocks OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, or PerplexityBot. Our guide to llms.txt and AI crawler access covers what to look for.
- Beyond Google. Confirm your main pages are indexed by Bing as well as Google, given that OpenAI names Bing as a search provider.
- The sites the engines read. Find out which directories and review sites the engines cite for your trade in Phoenix, and make sure you are listed on them with the same name, phone number, service area, and lines of business. Our study of which websites AI assistants cite lists them.
- Pages worth quoting. A page that answers one homeowner question plainly, with specifics from your own jobs, gives an engine something to use.
Then measure again, on every engine, over several weeks. One conversation with ChatGPT is not a measurement. A weekly record of which businesses each engine names is. The companion question, whether an engine can name a business that Google does not show, is covered in can ChatGPT recommend you without Google rankings.
